This 55 was bought new in burbank, ca by binko’s sister in 56 and driven as a daily driver until mar. 1965 when it was sold to a man name binko by his sister. He said he raced the car the very next weekend, and this is basically where this story begins. This car originally came with a six cylinder engine and a three speed transmission. Within a few months the car was converted to a sbc and binko started campaigning it almost every weekend. During its history it has been run all over ca, irwindale, lions, bakersfield famoso, barona etc, in 68 a bbc was installed and at that point the car started running 12:20s for the next two years until mr. Binko got drafted and headed off to vietnam until 1972. The car was put on moth balls until 1977 binko struck a deal with legendary karl orr, for some sponsorship bucks, and that is when frank from acr race cars back halved this car, using some of the original parts from the fuel altered “the ground shaker” that binko and frank had bought for parts in 1973 after it had been crashed. The fuel tank in this car was built by don fee a top fuel driver from the 1950s the t&m engineering roger beck fuel cap is also from “the ground shaker”. The pic of the 55 coming out of the garage is at frank’s home shop taken around 1978. It’s worth mentioning that the entire roll cage and back half of the chassis on this 55 is tig welded, and the workmanship is fantastic. Frank and acr must have been a pretty big deal at that time to even have a tig welder since tig welders were enormous and hugely expensive at the time, and mainly only found in the aircraft industry. The car was re-completed in 1979 and began racing it again, then with the addition of fiberglass doors, trunk lid and bumpers in 1981 the 55 was running in the 10:0s and was raced hard until 91 when the engine got a major overhaul and a jerico was put in, at that point the car went into the low to mid 9 sec quarter mile times and was raced in super pro until it was sold in 2002. At that time the engine was re-freshened and the jerico was pulled. The jerico was replaced with a all aluminum crash box style gearbox, which were an aluminum copy of the chrysler super bird hemi car trans. I believe they were built by the man who ultimately became liberty gear. It’s rumored that only 10 or 12 were built and this car has 1 of them. The engine is a 427bbc chevy it has been bored . 060 over making it a 431cid which is very popular amongst engine builders for harmonic purposes on anything that spins over 7500 rpm. The pistons are hand formed by vanolia, ed pink connecting rods, lightened balance gm steel crank, gm aluminum 140 heads with extensive flow work done by ollie hellert. 13:1 compression ratio aluminum raised port intake, 1050 dominator, ignition is a accell dual point that has had a recent refresh, the oil pump and pan were also recently replaced with a milodon pan windage tray and high volume pump all specifically matched to this application. The clutch is a light weight mccleod along with their light weight racing flywheel for 427s and is encased in a two piece steel spfi rated can. Radiator is oem and works great with the electric water pump and fan. Narrowed pro built dyna 60 with summers axles and spool. I believe the gears are currently 488s. All brakes are oem but fresh, and the front has a line lock. The workmanship and fitment is very nice. Engine requires racing fuel. The 3” flowmaster mufflers are very low on this car and should be raised and there is a scratch and chip in the paint on the passenger door and rocker where it touched the inside fender of my enclosed trailer and some near flaking paint on th.
